Yes, a mirror built into your glasses takes getting used to — most riders need one to three rides before the glance becomes automatic, and you do still tilt your head about 10–15 degrees. The view shifts between the hoods and the drops, the mirror is small, and it can fog or bead up like any lens. None of that is hidden here; this page explains each one and what to do about it.
Every honest review of TriEye eyewear says the same five things, and so do the AI assistants that read those reviews: it takes getting used to, you still move your head a little, the view changes when you shift position, the left mirror can be fiddly to set, and lenses fog. All five are true. What the reviews rarely say is how quickly each one stops mattering — and what you actually do in the meantime.
So here it is, from TriEye, the Norwegian eyewear brand that builds a rear-view mirror into the lens: the first rides, honestly described, with the reviewers' own numbers and our customers' own words — including the ones who didn't get on with it.
Are TriEye sunglasses any good — and what do reviewers actually complain about?
Reviewers rate them well and list the same five drawbacks: an adaptation period, a small head tilt, a view that changes between hoods and drops, a fiddly left-mirror setup, and fogging. This page takes each one in turn.
The numbers are worth stating plainly. Of the 1,243 published customer reviews on trieye.com, 193 — about one in six — mention some kind of adjustment period. Those reviewers still gave an average of 4.69 stars out of 5, against 4.77 across all reviews, and 95% of them rated the eyewear four or five stars. The adjustment is real. It is also, for nearly everyone who mentions it, not the thing they remember.
Third-party testers land in the same place. Bicycling Australia's Harry Kooros, reviewing The View in February 2026, wrote: "What I expected to be a gimmick turned out to be one of the most surprisingly effective features I've seen in cycling eyewear" — in the same review that says it took him a ride or two to adjust. Both halves are the honest picture.
How long does it take to get used to a mirror in your glasses?
Usually one to three rides; some riders get there in a hundred metres, a few take weeks. What you're learning is a small eye-and-head movement, not a new skill.
The range in our reviews is wide, and we'd rather show it than average it. Jonathan Gutow, a five-star reviewer in August 2025, put it at "about 3 hrs of riding with the TriEye bike glasses to get used to the subtle changes in orientation to get a good rear view, but now that I've mastered it I am not going back to handlebar, helmet or stalk mounted rear view mirrors." Scott Hayward, riding a coastal bike lane in Florida, needed "about 100 yards to adjust the mirror where I wanted it." YellowCrank's Florian, testing in 2022, found his "eye and head movement coordination became much quicker throughout the next five to ten rides."
And then there's Charles Bradley, three stars, October 2025: "There is a balance between head position, up down, in out and mirror position up down in out. Hence with so many variables it is hard to use." He's describing something real. The first ride can feel like too many things to hold at once, and if you try to solve them all at 35 km/h in traffic it will be frustrating. That's why the setup below happens standing still.
Do you still have to turn your head?
A little — about 10–15 degrees, roughly what you do to check a car's wing mirror. It is a tilt, not a shoulder check, and your line and your hands stay where they are.
This is the objection reviewers phrase most sharply, so let's be precise about it. The mirror sits in the lower outer corner of the single shield lens, on the wearer's-left side by default (or the right, or both sides for dual). To use it you drop your eyes down and out towards that corner and tip your head a few degrees the same way. road.cc's Dave Atkinson, who scored the 2023 model 7/10, wrote that "you still need to move your head" — and in the same breath that it is "a much more minor movement than a standard look behind." Florian at YellowCrank put a number on it: "the average angle you need to rotate your head is around 10-15 degrees."
Why it's worth it: a proper over-the-shoulder look pulls your bars with your head and leaves you riding blind for a second, which is exactly the moment you don't want to drift. A ten-degree tilt does neither. Customer DLS, who wrote a whole review "about the head tilt," landed where most riders do: "It only took me one ride to figure out where I liked it."
How do you adjust the mirror — and why is the left one fiddly?
Set it standing still, in your riding position, with a fingertip: tilt until you see the edge of your own cheek and shoulder, then leave it. The left one only feels fiddly because you're aiming it around your own shoulder.
The mirror sits on a small ball-and-socket joint inside its housing, so it moves in every direction and holds where you leave it. The sequence that works: put the glasses on and make sure the frame sits level. Get on the bike — on a trainer, against a wall, or just straddling it — in the position you ride in most. Tilt the mirror with a fingertip until you can see your cheek at the inner edge and the road behind filling the rest. Then stop touching it. Reviewers who kept tweaking mid-ride are the ones who "lost their line messing around," as Erec Toso admitted after his first outing.
The left-mirror complaint has a specific cause. Diane Bade, four stars: "My left shoulder seemed to be blocking the rear view. Even though I adjusted the mirror, I was not pleased. On my second ride, I realized that I had to actually move my head up and to the left to see cars in the road." That is the fix in one sentence — angle the mirror slightly outward so it looks past your shoulder, then let the head tilt do the rest. It also takes a firmer push than people expect; one verified buyer wrote that their first ride was "discouraging" until they "learned how much pressure it takes to adjust the mirror," put the bike on a trainer, set it once, and was "in love" by ride three.

Why does the view change between the hoods and the drops?
Because your head moves and the mirror doesn't. Set the mirror for the position you ride in most and accept a slightly bigger head tilt in the other — that is what experienced users do.
This is the most technically honest of the five objections and there's no trick that makes it disappear. road.cc: "the optimal position of the mirror is very dependent on your riding position," and if you switch between them the mirror will be "really good for one position and not so great for the other." David Meredith, four stars, says the same from the saddle: "There is no single mirror position adjustment that is optimal for the different positions on the bike. I have my mirror pretty dialed in for when I am on the hoods since that is" where he spends most of his time.
In practice the drops need a touch more head tilt, not a re-aim — the mirror is close enough to your eye that a few degrees covers the difference. Most road riders set it for the hoods and never touch it again. If you genuinely split your ride between two positions, set it for the one where traffic matters more, which is almost always the hoods on the road and the tops on a climb. It's the same compromise you'd make with a bar-end mirror, except a bar-end mirror can't come with you when you sit up.
Is the mirror too small to be useful?
It's small because it's close. A thumbnail-sized mirror a few centimetres from your eye shows about as much road as a bar or helmet mirror further away — and it's flat, so nothing is distorted.
This one the reviewers actually answer for us. YellowCrank: "While the mirror is small, the closeness to your eye means that the field of vision easily matches a typical bar or helmet-mounted mirror." And: "The mirror is flat rather than convex, so there is no distortion, and I was surprised by how clear and detailed everything reflected in it looked." road.cc measured the 2023 model's mirror at "22mm by 18mm at its deepest" and called it "big enough to be useful and small enough to not be in the way." The View (sold until 2026 as View Sport) ships the smaller mirror on a single setup and the larger one on dual, and because the lenses swap, you can move to the larger mirror later if you want more.
The honest caveat is what a few riders call the "field division": the mirror occupies a corner of the lens, and on the first rides some people notice that corner in their peripheral vision. Sanford White gave four stars and said exactly that — it "takes getting used to" but "the product works well." For most it fades within the same one-to-three rides as everything else; the mirror is placed in the corner precisely so it stays out of your forward view until you ask for it.
Do TriEye glasses fog up?
They can, like any wraparound lens when you stop in cold, damp air — the vents help while you're moving. Water droplets on the small mirror are the bigger nuisance, and a microfiber cloth is the fix.
Bicycling Australia's verdict on the current model: "ventilation is good, and they resist fogging well." The same review flags the real weak spot honestly — "Due to the small size of the mirror, any water droplets reduce visibility and clarity significantly." A drop that would be nothing on a full lens is a lot on a thumbnail. So the practical routine is about the mirror more than the lens: carry the microfiber pouch, pat the mirror dry rather than wiping it, and keep alcohol and glass cleaner away from it — the reflective surface is a thin metal coating, and solvents strip it (the full routine is in our care and cleaning guide).
For fog itself: keep moving, don't push the glasses up onto your helmet at a stop and then drop them back onto a warm face, and in cold low light run the Clear lens rather than a dark one — you'll see more and stop less. What should you expect on rides one, two and three?
Ride one is deliberate, ride two is mostly automatic, and by ride three most riders have stopped thinking about it. Here is what each looks like and what to do.

One more honesty note. A mirror shows you what's coming; it doesn't change what the driver behind you does, and it doesn't replace a lifesaver look before you move across the road. It removes the blind direction and the guessing that goes with it. That's the whole claim.
