Here's how a race runs: athletes sprint across the sand, leap into an open-hulled coastal boat, row roughly 250m out through the waves to a turn, then row back and sprint up the beach to the line. The inclusion of Beach Sprints at LA28 was confirmed by the IOC, with three medal events — men's solo, women's solo and a mixed double scull, the first-ever mixed event in Olympic rowing. According to Olympics.com, the racing will take place on the waterfront in Long Beach. World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland called the move "transformational for our sport in terms of global exposure." How does glare on the water affect coastal rowers?

The sea doubles your light problem: sun from above and a second dose bouncing off the surface straight into your eyes, washing out the shoreline, buoys and other boats you're trying to track.

Open water is one of the harshest glare environments there is — at low sun angles the surface throws a huge share of that light back up at you, and reflected glare flattens the contrast you need to read chop and spot hazards near shore.
